5 Checks When a Frozen Pipe Starts Thawing

A pipe that appears blocked by ice can release water through a split when the ice melts. Restored flow at one tap does not establish that the rest of the supply line is undamaged. Watch for changes from a safe location and arrange help when damage is suspected.

1. Watch for new moisture

Look for a growing stain, dripping or water collecting near the route of the previously frozen line. Do not open a ceiling that looks unstable.

2. Listen for unexpected water movement

A sound of running water while fixtures are closed is useful information for the provider. It does not identify the exact break by itself.

3. Keep the shutoff accessible

Know where the property shutoff is before changing the flow through the line. If it cannot be reached safely, ask the utility or building manager for assistance.

4. Avoid open flames

The American Red Cross advises against blowtorches and other open-flame devices for thawing pipes. Damaged or inaccessible lines need professional assessment rather than improvised heating.

5. Address exposure as well as the split

Ask about the route through unheated areas and exterior walls. Repairing the failed section and reducing future exposure are related decisions, but the appropriate method depends on the property.
